Grammy‑nominated singer, rapper, multi‑instrumentalist and contributor to one of the most iconic albums of the 1990s, John Forté, has passed away at age 50. He was found deceased in his home in Chilmark, Massachusetts, and authorities say there are no signs of foul play as the medical examiner investigates the cause.

Forté is best known for his work with the Fugees, especially on their legendary 1996 album The Score, where he co‑wrote and produced classics like “Cowboys” and “Family Business.” He later pursued a solo career with albums like Poly Sci and I, John, and collaborated with artists ranging from Wyclef Jean to Carly Simon.

His life story was one of brilliance, struggle, redemption, and artistic courage — including a prison sentence in 2000 that was commuted early thanks in part to advocacy by friends and fellow artists. In later years, he worked on meaningful projects like documentary scores and continued creating music that reflected his journeys.
