Tasty Pizza Burgers

Instructions

1. Prepare the Patties:
In a medium bowl, gently combine the ground beef, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties about ¾-inch thick. Use your thumb to press a slight dimple into the center of each patty; this prevents them from bulging during cooking.

2. Cook the Burgers:
Heat a large cast-iron skillet, grill pan, or outdoor grill over medium-high heat. Once hot, cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on the first side, until a good sear forms. Flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness, or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

3. Create the Pizza Topping:
Reduce the heat to low. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of marinara sauce over each patty. Immediately top with a generous mix of mozzarella and provolone cheeses. Arrange 3-4 pepperoni slices on top of the cheese. Cover the skillet with a lid (or tent with foil) for 1-2 minutes, just until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.

4. Toast the Buns:
While the cheese melts, spread the softened butter on the cut sides of your burger buns. Toast them in a separate skillet over medium heat or under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until golden brown and crisp.

5. Assemble and Serve:
Spread a thin layer of the remaining marinara sauce on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Carefully place a cheesy pizza patty on top. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired, crown with the top bun, and serve immediately.

Chef’s Notes & Variations

  • Protein Swap: For an authentic pizza flavor, try using a 50/50 mix of ground beef and Italian sausage.

  • Get Creative: Make it a “supreme” burger by adding sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, or olives when you add the cheese.

  • No Skillet? No problem! These can easily be cooked on an outdoor grill. Just add the toppings at the very end and close the lid to melt the cheese.

  • For a Crispy Pepperoni Kick: Quickly pan-fry the pepperoni slices separately until crispy before adding them to the burgers.
