These aren’t your average crisp-tender green beans. Simmered low and slow with bacon and onion, they become incredibly tender, flavorful, and soulfully Southern.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed and snapped in half

  • 4 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped

  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, sliced

  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes

  • 2 cups chicken broth, plus more if needed

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
