Slow Cooked Chicken & Gravy Recipe

Instructions

Step 1: Create the Gravy Base
In the bottom of your slow cooker, combine the cream of chicken soup, gravy mix packets, water, garlic powder, and onion powder. Whisk the mixture until the ingredients are smooth and well-blended. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Step 2: Add the Chicken
Nestle the chicken breasts into the gravy base in a single layer. Use a spoon to coat the top of each piece with the sauce. This helps to keep them moist and flavorful as they cook.

Step 3: Slow Cook to Perfection
Cover with the lid and cook:

  • On LOW for 6-8 hours (Recommended for the most tender, shreddable chicken).

  • On HIGH for 3-4 hours (A great faster option).

The chicken is done when it is cooked through and tender enough to shred easily with a fork.

Step 4: Shred and Combine
Once cooked, carefully remove the lid. Using two forks, shred the chicken directly in the slow cooker. Stir the shredded chicken back into the gravy until it’s fully coated. If you’re using the optional milk or cream for extra creaminess, stir it in now.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy!
Serve your delicious chicken and gravy hot over a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or steamed rice.

Chef’s Tips & Variations

  • Don’t Overcook: While slow cookers are forgiving, cooking for too long (beyond 8 hours on low) can cause the chicken to become mushy.

  • Boost the Flavor: For a deeper flavor, sear the chicken breasts in a hot skillet for 1-2 minutes per side before adding them to the slow cooker.

  • Creamier Gravy: For a thicker, richer gravy, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with ¼ cup of cold water. Stir this slurry into the slow cooker after shredding the chicken, then cook on HIGH for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until thickened.

  • Make it a Meal: This is a fantastic freezer meal! Combine all ingredients (except for the optional milk/cream) in a freezer bag. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before cooking as directed.
