“You know what, darling?” I replied, bewildered.
She showed me a baby pacifier and exclaimed, “I’m going to be a big sister!”
The evening drew to a close, and my thoughts were consumed by unanswered questions and anxieties. I knew I couldn’t just let it go. The next morning, after Henry had left for work, I tiptoed into his study. My hands trembled slightly as I placed the pacifier exactly where Laura had found it.
I was determined to uncover the truth behind this unsettling discovery without upsetting Henry. Something was wrong, and I had to find out what it was, not only for my own peace of mind but also for the sake of our family.
As the morning sun barely rose, I followed Henry’s car from a distance. My heart pounded with fear and determination as I watched him drive. He usually drove straight to his office downtown. But today he was taking a different route. My grip on the steering wheel tightened as his car turned into an unfamiliar part of the city.
