Over time, this drawer can accumulate thick layers of residue: leftover soap, fabric softener, and even mold if the place remains damp. In this case, the machine can no longer rinse or wash properly, and your clothes are far from fresh.
Before, I thought that a simple wipe with a damp cloth was enough. This was not the case. The accumulation of dirt hidden under the surface was slowly damaging my laundry and interfering with the proper functioning of my machine.
First step: a deep clean.
Cleaning the laundry tub turned out to be much easier than expected, and the difference was immediate.
Here’s what I did:
Remove the drawer completely. Most washing machines come with a small release tab near the center. Gently press it down and slide the drawer outwards.
Soak it in hot water. I filled the sink with hot soapy water and let the drawer soak for about 15 minutes. This helped to soften the embedded residue that had accumulated there for years.
Scrub every corner thoroughly. Using a toothbrush and a mild detergent, I scrubbed the edges, compartments, and small channels where water and detergent circulate. A mixture of water and vinegar has proven perfect for the most stubborn stains.
Clean the inside of the compartment. Before putting the drawer back in place, I wiped down the area inside the machine where it sits. This area also accumulates dirt and often smells musty if left uncleaned.
Dry completely. Once the drawer was clean, I let it dry completely before putting it back in.
After that, the drawer looked new and, for the first time in months, my laundry smelled great and was really clean.
Understanding Compartments
While cleaning was helpful, the real revelation came when I understood the role of each compartment.
Most laundry drawers have three separate compartments, each with its own symbol or label:
“I” — Pre-Wash Compartment: Use for heavily soiled laundry or long cycles including pre-wash.
“II” — Washing Compartment: This is where you put your usual liquid or powdered detergent. It is released during the main wash.
The Flower or Star Symbol: This compartment is intended for fabric softener, color protectants, or fragrance enhancers. These products are released during the last rinse.
Like many, I poured the detergent directly into the drum, which prevented the machine from distributing it properly. By pouring it into the laundry tub, it dissolves evenly, ensuring that the soap reaches every fiber of your laundry at the right time.
