Homemade Sloppy Joe

Instructions

1. Prepare the Bread:

  • Preheat your broiler. Arrange the hamburger buns (cut-side up) or Texas toast slices on a baking sheet.

  • Toast under the broiler for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Keep a close eye to prevent burning. Remove from the oven and set aside.

2. Cook the Filling:

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper. Break up the meat with a spoon and cook until the beef is browned and the vegetables are tender.

  • Drain any excess grease from the skillet and reduce the heat to low.

3. Make the Sauce:

  • To the skillet, add the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and yellow mustard. Stir until everything is well combined.

  • Let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.

4. Assemble and Melt the Cheese:

  • Place one slice of American cheese on each piece of toasted bread or bun half. Return the baking sheet to the broiler for about 30 seconds, just until the cheese is melted.

  • Spoon the hot Sloppy Joe mixture evenly over the cheesy bread. Top each one with another slice of American cheese.

  • Broil for another 30 seconds to melt the top layer of cheese.

5. Serve:

  • Serve immediately while hot and enjoy the gooey, savory deliciousness
