Classic Fried Bologna Sandwich

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bologna: Using a small, sharp knife, cut 4-5 small slits around the edge of each bologna slice, from the center out towards the edge. This will prevent it from curling up as it cooks.

  2. Toast the Bread: Spread the butter on the outside of your bread slices or bun. Toast them in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown, or use a toaster. Set aside.

  3. Fry the Bologna: In the same skillet over medium heat, add the bologna slices. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, until they are browned, slightly puffed, and crisp around the edges.

  4. Assemble the Sandwich: Spread mayonnaise and/or mustard on the inside of the toasted bread. Place the hot fried bologna directly on the bread. If using, add a slice of cheese so it melts from the heat of the bologna. Top with lettuce, tomato, a fried egg, or any other desired toppings.

  5. Serve: Press the sandwich together, cut in half if desired, and serve immediately while warm.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, make a small “X” in the center of the bologna slice along with the edge slits.

  • Don’t skip the toasting step with butter—it adds a crucial layer of flavor and texture.

  • Feel free to get creative with your sauces! BBQ sauce, hot sauce, or a dab of ranch dressing are all delicious options.
