Easy Southern Chow Chow

This tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy Southern relish is the perfect condiment for hot dogs, burgers, BBQ, beans, and more. It’s incredibly easy to make and packs a fantastic flavor punch.

Ingredients

For the Brine:

  • 2 ½ cups white vinegar

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • ½ tablespoon whole cloves

  • ½ tablespoon whole mustard seeds

  • ½ tablespoon whole peppercorns

  • ½ teaspoon mustard seed (optional, for extra flavor)

  • ¼ teaspoon celery seed

  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust for spice level)

  • 1 bay leaf

  • ⅛ teaspoon ground allspice

For the Vegetables:

  • 2 green tomatoes or tomatillos, chopped

  • 1 orange bell pepper, seeded and chopped

  • 2 Cubanelle, banana, or jalapeño peppers, seeded and chopped (remove ribs for less heat)

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 1 (12 oz) package shredded cabbage or coleslaw mi
